Downtown Edmonton has an interesting dynamic. There are clusters of people who go around together. Maybe one of the ways these clusters are formed is when they are all waiting for the green light to cross the street. This reminds me of a phenomenon that I read about some years ago about how buses tend to reach each other on a route and form a cluster. It is called Bus Bunching. Anyway, other than these rare clusters of people, one will mostly see huge distances between people. That is part of the reason that this photo is also part of my "distances between us" project.

Before coming to Canada I read about this phenomenon called Americanization that is affecting countries like Canada. Some of the people I talked to about the Coffee project, that I am working on, specially Michael the owner of Java Jive coffee, which is closing this month of 37 years of serving Edmonton, blame demise of many local businesses partially on uncontrolled monster franchise companies from United States. This phenomenon can be assessed from different aspects such as cultural effects and business effects and can be a whole separate project itself. Hopefully I will find more time later to talk about it.

This is part of the "Distances Between Us" project that I am keeping on the back of my mind while doing street photography. I want to explore distances between people. There are many aspects to these distances and hopefully I am going to explore these.
